An elderly Rochelle woman is dead after she was struck by a train in the downtown area of Rochelle yesterday evening.
The incident took place a short time after 5:30 at the Union Pacific Railroad tracks on Washington Street, just south of the intersection of Lincoln Highway and Lincoln Avenue.
The 76-year old woman from Rochelle was walking near the tracks when hit by the train.
Emergency personnel found her under the train following the accident. She was taken by ambulance to Rochelle Community Hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later.
Officials say that the woman was deaf and they found a walker at the scene.
Her name is not being released at this time until family members are notified about the incident.
The Union Pacific Railroad crossing was closed for around 3 hours last night following the accident. The fatality remains under investigation.
